Glossary
Comprehensive terminology reference with definitions, related terms, and usage context.
21 terms defined
- Arch
- The highest point of the brow, typically located above the outer edge of the iris. In PMU work, precise arch placement is critical for achieving natural-looking, flattering results.
- Apex
- Another term for the arch; the highest point of the eyebrow curve.
- Bulb
- The thickest part of the brow at the inner corner, nearest the nose.
- Body
- The middle section of the brow between the head and tail.
- Brow Bone
- The ridge of bone above the eye socket that supports the eyebrow. Understanding brow bone structure is essential for predicting how PMU will heal and age.
- Colour Boost
- A follow-up PMU session performed after initial healing to refresh or intensify pigment. Typically scheduled 6-12 months after initial procedure or touch-up.
- Combination Brows
- A PMU technique blending hair strokes (typically at the front) with shading or powder effect (typically through the body and tail). Offers both natural detail and lasting definition.
- Correction Work
- PMU procedures aimed at fixing unsatisfactory previous work. May involve colour correction, shape adjustment, or camouflage techniques. Requires advanced diagnostic skills.
- Healed Result
- The final appearance of PMU work after complete healing (typically 4-6 weeks). Pigment will appear 30-50% lighter than immediately after the procedure. True assessment of PMU quality should only be made at this stage.
- Head
- The starting point of the brow at the inner corner; also called the bulb.
- Mapping
- The process of measuring and marking brow points to create a guide for shaping. In PMU, precise mapping is critical as errors are semi-permanent.
- Microblading
- A manual PMU technique using a handheld blade to create fine, hair-like strokes that deposit pigment into the superficial dermis. Results typically last 12-18 months depending on skin type.
- Nano Brows
- A machine-based PMU technique creating ultra-fine hair strokes using a single needle. Often preferred over microblading for oilier skin types due to better pigment retention.
- Ombré Brows
- A PMU shading technique creating a gradient effect—lighter at the front, more defined through the body and tail. Also called powder brows or shaded brows. Known for longevity and suitability across skin types.
- Peak
- The highest point of the brow arch.
- Perfecting Session
- A follow-up PMU appointment scheduled 6-8 weeks after the initial procedure to refine shape, adjust saturation, and address any areas where pigment didn't take optimally during initial healing.
- Pigment Retention
- How well and how long PMU pigment remains visible in the skin. Affected by skin type (oilier skin retains less), aftercare compliance, sun exposure, and individual healing response.
- Powder Brows
- See Ombré Brows. A soft, filled-in PMU look achieved through pixel-by-pixel shading technique.
- String Mapping
- A mapping technique using pre-inked string to create precise measurement lines. Standard practice in professional PMU for ensuring symmetry and accurate placement.
- Tail
- The outer end of the brow that tapers to a point.
- Touch-Up
- A PMU session to refresh pigment or make minor adjustments. The initial touch-up (perfecting session) is typically included in procedure pricing; subsequent touch-ups are scheduled as needed based on retention.
