Section App. A: Measurement Reference Sheets
Appendix A: Measurement Reference Sheets
This appendix provides standardised measurement protocols and reference values for use in clinical practice. These sheets support consistent documentation and enable comparison across clients and over time.
Facial Proportion Measurements
Vertical thirds measurement: Hairline to brow line, brow line to nasal base, nasal base to chin. Classical proportion indicates roughly equal thirds, though individual variation is normal. Document actual measurements in millimetres and calculate proportional ratios.
Horizontal fifths measurement: Facial width divided into five equal segments, each approximately one eye-width. Measure from lateral edge of face to lateral canthus, lateral canthus to medial canthus (eye width), medial canthus to medial canthus (intercanthal distance), and continue bilaterally. Document actual measurements.
Brow Position Measurements
Brow head position: Measure from midline to medial brow head on each side. Compare bilateral measurements. Document position relative to medial canthus and nasal ala vertical alignment.
Brow apex position: Measure from midline to highest point of arch on each side. Document position relative to pupil centre and lateral limbus. Record height above orbital rim.
Brow tail position: Measure from midline to lateral brow termination on each side. Document position relative to lateral canthus and nasal ala-to-lateral canthus alignment line.
Brow Dimension Measurements
Total brow length: Measure from medial head to lateral tail along the brow curve. Document separately for each brow and calculate difference.
Head-to-apex distance: Measure from medial head to apex point along the brow. Express as absolute measurement and as percentage of total length.
Apex-to-tail distance: Measure from apex point to lateral tail along the brow. Express as absolute measurement and as percentage of total length.
Brow thickness: Measure vertical brow width at head, at apex, and at tail. Document all three measurements for each brow.
Golden Ratio Reference Values
Phi (φ) = 1.618. Apply to brow proportions: Optimal head-to-apex:apex-to-tail ratio approximates 1:1.618. Measure actual ratio and compare to phi. Note that significant deviation from phi does not necessarily indicate problem—individual suitability overrides ratio matching.
