Section App. E: Glossary of Advanced Terms

Appendix E: Glossary of Advanced Terms

This glossary defines specialised terminology used throughout the manual.

Anatomical Terms

Corrugator supercilii: Muscle originating from medial supraorbital ridge, inserting into brow skin, responsible for brow depression and vertical glabellar crease formation.

Dermis: Skin layer beneath epidermis where permanent makeup pigment is implanted; contains collagen, elastin, and vascular structures.

Frontalis: Broad forehead muscle responsible for brow elevation and horizontal forehead crease formation.

Glabella: Smooth area between brows overlying the junction of frontal and nasal bones.

Orbicularis oculi: Muscle encircling the orbit; upper portion influences inferior brow margin during expression.

Procerus: Small muscle at nasal root contributing to medial brow depression and horizontal nasal root crease.

Supraorbital ridge: Thickened region of frontal bone creating the brow platform; prominence varies individually.

Technical Terms

Blade configuration: Arrangement of needles in microblading tool affecting stroke characteristics.

Complementary colours: Colours opposite on colour wheel that neutralise each other when mixed; basis for colour correction.

Dermal implantation: Placement of pigment within dermis at appropriate depth for retention.

Hair flow engineering: Strategic design of stroke patterns replicating natural hair growth direction and variation.

Migration: Spread of pigment beyond intended boundaries through various mechanisms.

Retention: Degree to which implanted pigment remains visible over time.

Saturation: Intensity of colour in completed work; controlled through technique parameters.

Undertone: Underlying colour bias in pigments or skin that influences final colour appearance.

Assessment Terms

Asymmetry diagnosis: Systematic identification and characterisation of bilateral differences.

Bone mapping: Documentation of skeletal landmarks relevant to brow positioning.

Dynamic assessment: Evaluation of muscular behaviour and brow movement during expression.

Fitzpatrick scale: Standardised classification of skin type based on sun response and pigmentation.

Structural reading: Analysis of facial architecture including bone, muscle, and soft tissue configuration.

Strategic Terms

Correction logic: Decision frameworks for addressing existing work or natural brow characteristics.

Decision hierarchy: Structured approach to prioritising and sequencing decisions in complex situations.

Execution strategy: Integrated approach to implementing work based on comprehensive assessment.

Expectation calibration: Process of aligning client expectations with achievable outcomes.
